You may or may not have heard about Trauma Informed Care (TIC). "TIC is an approach, based on the knowledge of the impact of trauma, aimed at ensuring environments and services are welcoming and engaging for service recipients and staff." Its basis is the growing body of knowledge about the negative impacts of psychological trauma and how it impacts everyone. The goal of this workshop is to help us as archivists understand ways to incorporate TIC in our thinking and practices to better serve ourselves, our colleagues, and those seeking our support and services.

Archivists deal with potential trauma in many forms. It could be working with or providing access to collections with upsetting content, working with challenging researchers who may have their own trauma guiding their actions, supporting students and interns facing uncertainty and their own traumas, and burnout from too many responsibilities and not enough staff to give our work the attention we feel it deserves, among others

This workshop is an opportunity for us as archivists to consider how trauma affects us and those around us and address the inevitable compassion fatigue and burnout that can develop in the course of our work. Through movement and play, this session will help us engage with Trauma Informed Care and learn how to take care of ourselves so we're better prepared to care for our colleagues, staff, researchers, interns, students, and anyone else in our lives.

During this 4 hour session you will be invited to:

  • Explore what it means to care for yourself and others
  • Soften together to experience a deep sense of community, joy, and care
  • Celebrate and honor our collective humanity as we lean into the brilliant humans we already are

We invite you to wear comfortable clothing and shoes.

Please dress in layers as we will be moving around and you may want to shed layers throughout the experience.

No prior experience in the arts or movement is needed.
